What is DMSO?

Life Choice DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has many uses, but it is known mostly as a natural pain killer and transporter of other substances. DMSO’s anti-inflammatory activity relieves the inflammation of arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, and other musculoskeletal injuries. As a vasodilator, dmso enlarges small blood vessels increasing circulation to the area.

First synthesized in 1866, DMSO is a sulfur-containing organic compound that is derived from MSM, and can be used internally or externally. DMSO can aid injuries such as sprained ankles, sore muscles and joints, and even fractures. The process starts when DMSO enters the bloodstream by osmosis through capillary walls. Then, DMSO is distributed throughout the circulatory system.

DMSO also promotes immune system activity and can help in bodily detoxification. Historically, DMSO has also helped conditions such as neurological damage, arthritis, back problems, keloids, acne, burns, musculoskeletal problems, sinusitis, headaches, skin ulcers, herpes, and cataracts. Topical application has been associated with redness and inflammation of skin, and a garlic-like taste and odor on the breath and or body have been reported, although varies greatly among individuals.

Suggested Use

Apply DMSO topically as needed or as directed by your natural health practitioner.

DMSO is best applied by clean hands, only patting or painting the area of application . Do not rub into skin as this may cause more irritation.

You can expect the area treated to become temporarily red and itchy. This is only a temporary reaction, and will subside after about 30 minutes.

Applying a layer of pure fresh aloe vera gel (from whole leaf, not bottled product), has also been reported to help greatly with irritation and make applying DMSO much more tolerable.

To lessen any irritation, you may dilute the solution with pure distilled water to desired solution concentration. When DMSO is diluted with water, and exothermic reaction occurs, heat is released. The bottle will become warm to the touch. This is a temporary, harmless reaction.

The optimal DMSO concentration varies from 50 to 90%. The more sensitive the area, (face and neck) the lesser concentration should be applied. It is advised to start with lower concentrations until skin tolerance builds up.

 

Other DMSO Information

DMSO is a very temperature sensitive product. Liquid DMSO can and will crystallize in a cold environment. If this occurs, place or keep the DMSO bottle in a warm location (15°C – 20°C), and within a few hours it should go back to liquid form. For faster results, place the bottle in a clean zip lock bag, seal it, and place it in warm water.

Do not microwave under any circumstances.
